What’s a fireplace insert?
An insert fits into an existing fireplace and increases the traditional open wood-burning fireplace’s efficiency. The most common inserts are gas (direct vent) or wood.
What’s the difference in vented and vent free?
Vented gas logs burn like a real wood fire with a yellow flame that produces smoke. They must be burned in a wood burning fireplace with the damper open, so smoke goes up the flue along with most of the heat. Ventless (vent-free) gas logs burn cleanly with a lower flame that does not smoke. You can burn them with the damper closed to heat your room.
Why won’t my gas logs light?
Sometimes, it’s as easy as a battery replacement. For the system to function properly, fresh batteries are required. Even if the batteries can power a different device, the voltage may be too low. Replace batteries in both the remote and the receiver.
Why won’t my pilot light stay lit or light?
The problem could be dust or debris, the thermocouple, or the valve. Over time dust of other containments can block the oxygen depletion sensor, causing the system to shutdown. Cleaning the sensor will fix the issue. The thermocouple plays a critical role in igniting the pilot light. If it’s faulty, the pilot light won’t stay lit. While valves are durable, they can fail too. It’s important to have a professional inspect and perform maintenance annually to help prevent problems from happening.
Can I convert my wood-burning fireplace to gas logs?
Yes. The first step is to have someone inspect your fireplace chimney. If it is in good condition, a gas line needs to be run to the fireplace by a certified plumber or gas installer. You can decide which type of gas appliance you want to install – vented, vent free, or gas insert (direct vent). Then, measure your fireplace.
Are vent free gas logs safe?
If properly installed, maintained, and operated, gas appliances are safe and approved. All vent free logs have an oxygen depletion sensor. It’s a safety mechanism to detect if oxygen levels drop from 20.9% to 18%, resulting in the system’s shutdown. The American Gas Association code for vent free gas products in 20 PPM. For reference, gas ranges are 400 PPM.
Do vent free gas logs smell?
The odor is a personal sensitivity. Most homeowners don’t object, but it’s an individual sensitivity. We recommend visiting our showroom before purchasing one.
Will my fireplace or stove heat during a power outage?
Different products can perform during power outages. Most gas systems have back-up battery ignition, so as long as you have fresh batteries, your gas stove or logs will light.
